Automatic to manual hub questions

hey all,

so i'm getting ready to swap my auto hubs to manual. i was reading the article in the tech forums and had a few questions.

1) what is the "big nut" the author refers to?

2)what should I torque the it to for 31" tires?

3)when installing the C-clip, will I need the other washers besides the toothed one?

tech library has 2 write ups on installing them. that's what i used, worked great.

Just did this job about 2 weeks ago! VERY VERY EASY job to do. I was able to knock out both sides in less than an hour. The "big nut" is what keeps your outer wheel bearing in place. Don't forget to take the "key" out of it before you start loosening it! Your instructions should tell you what to torque the new nut to, but it is pretty well standard that it gets 35 ft/lbs then back off 1/4 turn (90*) and retourque to 16 in/lbs. Don't forget to turn the wheel the opposite direction when you are tourqing this nut. It will help to seat the wheel bearing properly, so I was told. My instructions with my Manual hubs (Mile Marker) told me to put all three washers I took off back on. Also, a bit of a helper here, get someone else to help you when you go to torque the outer spindle nut to 150 ft/lbs. I was able to get it done by myself but it was not fun. The wrench kept slipping out of the slots. Had some help with the other side, one guy on the wrench and me pushing the head of the wrench keeping it firmly in place made it much easier. Yep, real easy swap. On your '97 you should actually have 3 washers on the end of the axle shaft (two steels, and a Delrin one in between them). They will be retained with the manual hub swap.

The only thing I would do different is if you plan to run larger tires on it at some point, torque the outer locknuts down to 225ft-lbs or so instead of 150ft-lbs. They tend to come loose if you only go to 150. Make sure the lock ring & inner nut stays put while torquing it also.
