Hey Guys. My Ranger was making a clunking noise when put in gear and had a vibration when coasting in gear. I went looking for a bad u-joint today and realized the pinion flange was loose. I know my mechanic tightened the pinion nut once because he said it was loose. My question is will I be able to tighten the pinion nut/flange up without changing the preload on the bearings since I don't have a reference point on how tight the nut was originally? Thanks.

You might get away with it, but they usually get loose due to bearing wear. I would be inclined to change the pinion bearings.

I would check and replace pinion bearings if needed, replace the crush sleeve and the pinion seal.

I think I will pop off the diff cover and inspect the gears and carrier for damage. If they are not damaged, what could I expect to pay to have a shop do all the work you mentioned? I saw a couple disc brake Explorer 8.8's on craigslist. If they were in good shape that might be a good option instead of putting money into my current axle.

Don't know shop rate, phone. Then buy 'new' axle. Tighten axle pinion nut. Wait to install 'new' axle. You may wait a long time, time enough to learn to DIY.
Goodluck,

Richard

If it was that loose I would put a new flange on it too. The splines may be wallered out.
