Hello All,
This is my first post here after much lurking and reading. I have learned a great deal from this site and am looking forward to becoming an active member.
I recently purchased an 89 Ranger Supercab 4x4 with the 2.9 and manual transmission in it. Here's my issue that I hope the collective knowledge here can help me with.
Over the weekend I replaced the center support (some call it the carrier) bearing and the rear u-joint. Both were completely trashed. I had a little hiccup when getting the driveline out in that I could only remove three of the four bolts on the rear yoke. I actually broke a socket trying to get it out. So I just took apart the u-joint and the rest came out nice and easy.
From reading here I know that getting the two-piece back together exactly the same is very important so I marked everything before breaking it down. I replaced the center support and put it all back together with the marks lined up (at least I think everything is back to the original spot) and put it back in the truck.
I now have a pretty stout vibration that kicks in at 40 mph. It wasn't there before so I know it's something I've done wrong. If I got the driveline off by a tooth or two when it went back together, could that be the culprit? How sensitive are these? Is there anything else to look at before I start tearing it down again?
I'm reluctant to tear it apart again because of the issue with the rear yoke. If I could get all of the bolts out I'd just drop the driveline and take it to a shop and get it re-balanced. That's not an option right now until I can somehow get that bolt out. I can break the driveline down in the middle and try to re-align the splines, but it's got to happen under the truck and I'm not too excited about that proposition.
Any ideas out there or does everyone think (like I do) that I've got it mis-aligned?
