How many of you have RV's, campers, homemade campers, or vehicles set up for camping (including custom trailers for camping gear)? Let's see what you've got.

We have a 30 foot bumper pull camper. Just got it a few months ago.
also I've got plans for a camping trailer, basically just a trailer w/ a roof rack and flood lights on it. just b/c the b2 doesn't exactly have a lot of interior space for tents and supplies for expo camping trips.
something like this
http://i1234.photobucket.com/albums/ff412/88Bronco2/canadian_m101_m416_trailers_06.gif
way to carry extra fuel, a water holding tank, hi-lift, extra spare tire, extra axle shafts and u-joints, and more.
might eventually get a Roof Top Tent.
Going to buy a 40' toy hauler 5er. For now we just use the canopy for me and the wife and the kids sleep in the tent.

My bus. It's always under construction. I'm trying to decide where to put the wood stove. Right now, I'm putting a box in the house so I can use the generator in the bus for stand-by power.
Check out the link for some construction photos.

Right after the SAS, worked not bad...

Then I ditched the quad for more storage and let another dude haul them, note the flipped trailer axle.

Now it'll be this with an air mattress in the back and the ranger on a trailer behind it.

i either sleep in the bed of the ranger, or tent it. i had a sweet pop up, but had to sell it. and its not really camping unless you sleep in something that a dangerous animal can get into easily and kill you while you sleep.... it just adds to the fun camping experience!
Campin' ain't campin' if you can't smell the rain and listen to the bugs. :icon_thumby:
I did my camping professionally. I've been chewed on by bugs and soaked with rain on 4 continents, 2 deserts and 6 islands with my only shelter a poncho and occasionally a canvas sleeping bag if there was going to be snow. I've never used a tent before, but that sounds bad too. There's bears and shit walking around trying to eat you and you can't see which way they are coming from. I'm protected by 2 layers of heavy steel, rubber gaskets at the doors and a huge air conditioner. All the bugs put on their parkas and haul ass when the big Carrier cycles into action. You can keep the bugs and patter of rain.
The funny thing about camping--when we go to campgrounds, it's crowded. We're used to 15 acres of isolation and campfires all the time. I'm not sure why my wife drags me out. To look at people I guess.

To me, the whole point of camping is being in the outdoors.
I have tent camped in just about all the climates in North America, 100+ hidious humidity, 0 and below with snow, Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Arkansas and at Fort A.P. Hill in Virginia.
IMO, if I am going to sit and watch tv in front of the A/C I could save a ton of money and do it at home in my lazy boy. I am out there do something outdoors anyway (usually fish anymore) And if I want somewhere secure to stay, instead of dragging my hotel room around with me it is a lot cheaper to just get a hotel room and not have to do deal with setting everything up, and loading it back up or hammering down the fuel dragging a small house to get wherever it is I am going.
I ain't trying knock on anybody, but that is why I do what I do.

RV camping is the way to go. the Motorhome we had (refered to as Satan's Motorhome) got 13 mpg and cost less to drive it cross country than it did to drive the expedition (17 mpg) and stay in Motels.

Ok, total newbie here BUT I'm soon to have a 2.3L Ranger engine in my truck -so no bad mouthin!
My bug-out camper is 1,000 lbs, 1977 13' Trillium. Solar powered fridge and entertainment, propane powered furnace and stove, electric brakes and my Vdub is a 1-ton truck. Most people don't know that about them.

Currently running 235/75R15" Yokohama Geolander A/T tires. For $110 each they are good tires but they like to dig from a standstill (not pictured in photo).

figured i would add to this. i think it is a great section albeit underused.
1994 explorer cooper stt's, tube bumpers. these were taken on various trips in northwest, co.
My bug-out camper is 1,000 lbs...and my Vdub is a 1-ton truck.
People don't realize that in Europe, you carry the same shit with smaller trucks. I had a '68 VW van and we'd fill the thing from floor to ceiling with cases of soda and it never even really noticed. I had a hitch made for it which attached to a pipe bumper and also up the sides of the engine compartment. I pulled a 3-axle trailer with a '74 Thunderbird on it one time, and lots of other vehicles on a dolly. I think of those things more as farm tractors with bodies than as vehicles. I blew the engine a lot, but it's so easy to pull it from a van and back then it cost about $20 to overhaul it. It's ridiculous that an engine you can pull by hand and toss up on a workbench by yourself can power such a useful vehicle. I actually still have my old John Muir Idiot's book right here.

I've posted this in a couple of other threads. I'm sitting here in bed feeling like crap from allergies wasting time. I'll be better for next weeks outing though!
I'm putting a 2.3L out of a Mustang in it - soon. The machine shop should be done on Tuesday. Still have to fab some things - motor mounts and a "deck lid' in the bed to make it easy to change the oil and adjust the carb. I'm using an Esslinger adapter and running the rad under the body between the frame rails. The camper only weighs 1,000 lb's. It's a 1977 13' Trillium (fiberglass). Sink, stove, heater, AC., porta potti and solar power. Still got to get the entertainment (stereo and (yes) TV -all 12V. installed.

pvc conduit cut to size
a nice canvas tarp, with sewen eyelets (no metal) would be best for this, as it would be quiet, and wouldn't scratch the paint, but i don't know of anyone who works with canvas... though i'm sure if i talked to my dad, he could probably whip something up for me...
just sent my dad an email, hopefully he will get back to me, he loves working on stuff like this so i don't really see it being an issue...
just curious, depending on price, is this something that anyone else on the forum might be interested in?

Anyway, for whoever asked about it being rare, they are hard to come by, but this one was on it's last leg. It was hit hard on the drivers side and the door still doesn't close right. I'm the only one that would put work into something like it.
Weezl- I camped like that a couple of trips ago. NEVER AGAIN (with plastic)! You're right about needing a canvas top.

i'm a pretty heavy sleeper, so once i'm asleep, i don't typically wake back up again, but a canvas tarp would be MUCH better quality

Weezl, yes I would be interested in something like that. Does the pvc conduit flex much under gusts of wind, or is it pretty sturdy? I was thinking maybe adding a roof beam connecting the 2 hoops across the top to keep the hoops from flexing, but I have never tried a setup like this before.

it's pretty solid, i will have to do some work to see what the cost to make it would be, but as it turns out, i've got everyone i need, to do everything from creating the design, right up to manufacturing the product, in my immediate family, the only thing i don't have is someone who has a whole bunch of fabric.

when we did one on a friends truck... we used pvc w/ 90 degree elbows and stuff and framed it out. so it was shaped like a regular bed camper topper then covered it w/ a military tarp we found at a surplus store for $30 :D it worked great.. of course yall already talked about all this... but it does work great.
RollinWOT
04-08-2012, 10:13 PM
I bet it does work great with the 90* elbows. I would go for a set of 45* elbows that way it gives the more headroom of a regular camper shell but is slanted on the sides so it doesn't catch as much air and risk the tarp being ripped off. So many different things to think of.

he only used his when doing expo trips.. the frame comes out easily, has holes drilled where he can bolt it in w/ wingnuts.. and the tarp comes off and gets rolled up behind the seat..
now when doing expo trips the entire thing stays on the truck. works great. i'll try to get pics next time he's around w/ it on. just don't mind that he has a Taco and not a ranger lol

it was used, i bought it for 400$ the guy wanted 500 but i had to drive to red deer so he took of the gas price =). nothing wrong with it at all...got a hell of a steal. he just wanted to get rid of it he got a 30+ foot trailer.
couple rips in the canvas, i pached them though, and just in case
i took the tarp from one of those car tent/garage things and cut it to shape so it drapes over each side of the pop outs. keeps wind down as well as heat out during the day!!
and the stove and sink actually swing out on a hinge so i can cook and clean outside!

Hi, First post here.. I'm the guy helping itlives with the Vw Pickup Ford conversion... I've race 2300 Fords for 11 years in Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas ...... I have built some pretty potent 2300's and 2500's and really love the engines... I helped steer Mike to the ford as a conversion engine due to power requirements, reliability and availaility of parts.. :headbang:
Here is my creation... While not a Ford 2300 it's still a pretty unique approach at offroad camping.... Clyde is a 1973 Vw Adventurewagen.... Powered by 2.8 L Chevy..... I almost went with the Ford 2.8l Cologne V6 but parts were difficult to source on the road.. The V6 is bored .040 over, Torquer Cam, Edelbrock Tunnelram, Holley 4bbl. puts out 200hp and 200Ft. Torque.. The rest is beefed up Vw.
Clyde had a 4" lift kit on him running 32" AT tires rear and 30" up front.. 4:57 R&P with a Overdrive 4th gear installed... drops rpms to 2700 @ 70mph. I've since removed the lift kit but still run the tires..... He just handles better at 75mph..
Inside Clyde sleeps 2. It has a 65watt solar panel on top to supply dual batteries with power ... solar powered fridge, running water, DVD/TV with surround sound. LED's throughout.... It's a very fast and fun camper...
I built a custom AT trailer to pull extra camp gear and my canoe/kayak with.

That's a pretty sweet set-up. :icon_thumby:

pvc conduit cut to size
a nice canvas tarp, with sewen eyelets (no metal) would be best for this, as it would be quiet, and wouldn't scratch the paint, but i don't know of anyone who works with canvas... though i'm sure if i talked to my dad, he could probably whip something up for me...
just sent my dad an email, hopefully he will get back to me, he loves working on stuff like this so i don't really see it being an issue...
just curious, depending on price, is this something that anyone else on the forum might be interested in?
i have a toolbox how would i do this

I did this just to move it one time. I have a dodge 2500 cummins, and a 79 f150 with a modded 400 and a C6 that I normally would use.

love the different rigs and ideas, this next winter i'm going to start building a Expidition type trailer with heat to take the wife and our 3 kids out ( they're all under 5 except the wife of coarse) hoping to start a business out of this and keep them under 5 grand .hopefully it'll work out.
