I don't know who all is familiar with overlanding, but its basically traveling to remote places with off road vehicles. Its more about the journey and adventure than the destination. Its like a road trip that's almost entirely off road and you camp instead of staying in hotels. Over the past couple years I've become very interested in this, especially after following Travis's build thread and reading his website, safaripacific.com. I know our fall meeting kind of fell apart so I figured if this idea had a chance, we need to plan way in advance. I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in a 2 or 3 day overlanding trip on the K-Trail? This is a popular trip on other forums and people always seem to have a blast. It stretches all the way from Clayton, OK to Hot Springs ,AR. For this trip though the plan is to end at Mena, AR which is about 100 miles. The place. It is currently scheduled for Saturday morning, March 17.

Sounds like fun. I have been thinking of something similar. I have heard of trails in NW Arkansas near Cass. I want to spend a day traveling (Cass is only 3-4 hours from the house) and running up a trail till I/we find a good, secluded camp site. Once there, we would set up a base camp and spend the next day(s) wheeling, fishing and chilling. The final day we break camp and travel home.
This could easily be done on a three day weekend allotting the middle day for fun time.
On a personal note, my truck isn’t ready for any traveling (much less a full day of wheeling) right now. The 3.0 is tired. I have a 4.0 which I hope to swap in early next spring. After that, I would still need an 8.8” rear to be comfortable. I’m shooting for next summer on the rear end. The Ranger still wouldn’t exactly be “finished” at that point but I could at least take it on a light(ish) excursion.
Once my truck is ready (and after some serious kissing up to my wife) either type of adventure sounds like a good time to me.

I would have, but I was in chevys at the time and I was embarrassed. My lil state truck is a colorado and I try not to advertise that Im in it.
This idea should go over well. Steves B2 is trail tested and approved. Uno's B2 looks ready for overland. Frank is a scout leader. Id have to decide betw the F150 & B2.
When are you wanting to do this
daniel3507
11-22-2011, 11:04 AM
I was just kind of thinking anytime everyone is ready and able to go. I wasnt thinking anytime soon really. Maybe spring or so.
Jim Oaks

I was planning to use the B2 for trips and build a camper out of a Ranger bed with a shell to match it. Vanessa and I love to travel. We'd like to actually go cross country, but not sure if I want to go that far in a B2. Thought about putting a shell on the F-150 and head west.
Believe it or not, we're even considering buying an older Chevy Suburban and building it to be able to go cross country and sleep in. We went to the junk yard and measured the inside of a bunch of vehicles and took in to consideration cost and ease to work on (which ruled out any vans due to the motor placement) and decided on a Chevy Suburban. The Expedition was a close second, but doesn't have enough room behind the second row seats for me to sleep like the Suburban does.
The other idea was to stretch the frame on an extended cab Ranger and add a 7-foot Ranger bed and cap for a camper, or dumping the bed and adding a box that was a camper similar to the Unicats.
Unfortunately, the Suburban would be the cheaper way to go. Another nice feature is not having to exit the vehicle to get in to the camper section.
I've been interested in this, too. I used to do that for a living actually, except with guns and shit. Sleep under the stars, though. You don't need to sleep in a vehicle. Or we do it in lifted canned-ham trailers.
Jim Oaks

I'd be down for it, but I don't really want to be taking the B2 off-road where I could be denting and scratching it up. TRS-2 really isn't an option because I think the motor is in need of overhauling.

From what I understand the route through the texas hill country isnt one that would leave a bunch of back country pinstripes on our rigs. It seems to be pretty easy trails and a water crossing or two. I have a .gpx file of the route if anyone is interested in seeing it.

funny thing is during my trip to Clayton last month we learned that K-Trail is ALL off-road from Clayton, OK to Mena, AR. My cousin and I are talking about doing it this coming spring if we can free up the time. He talked to a few fireman from Durant that done it in 2 days but said 3 would be idea. you will need 4 wheel drive but I heard its not that bad. would really depend on the weather.
if you go to Google maps and find Clayton the trail is just to the east of there. If you have the labels on it will show you K-Trail and you can follow it to Mena.

From the pics on pirate, those trucks didn't seem extreme, so 31's would probably be ok.

Are we thinkin Spring Breakish or more like April/May
sbsrlewis
11-29-2011, 05:31 PM
spring break would be idea weather (hopefully). as for the drop grower....its SE OK and that's what's done there. I never travel into that part of OK WITHOUT taking at least one pistol per truck. The people down there are very protective of their stuff or stuff they think is theirs! Dual Sport riders from Ok, TX, KS and AR use this trail fairly often. My son (9 years old) goes with me and if I was TRUELY worried I wouldnt take him nor would I go. I know some of you will be but you carry a gun too...yes I do. I also carry spare parts. Hope to not have to use either of them.

I like spring break. We need to get an idea of who is going and when everyone is available. If you are seriously interested in this let me know and I'll update the first post with everyone's names. Also, should I add a poll to help decide where we are going? I know some people showed interest when the original plan was to go to texas hill country and people are interested in the K-Trail as well.

Ok here's my deal...yes I plan to go but dont plan it around me by any means. I'm hoping things get better this next year. This divorce is eating my ass! Hard to live off one when use to two. Anyway if money is there I'm there.
What I would like to do is be able to set aside a week, that's why I said spring break, and leave Clayton and take 2+ days to get to Clayton. If the trail is as fun as everyone makes it out to be then I would like to get a good meal in Mena and maybe a shower then take the trail back to Clayton.
That's my $.02

when you say the week of the 18th what dates are you referring to? I am trying to find official dates for my spring break so that I can say for sure if I can go.
Also meeting up around noonish on a friday seems like the best time to meet up. The guys that work only have to take one day off, or a monday off to make it a 4 day trip. And gives some of us that have college schedules a chance to wakeup and show up on time.

drop into your local Love's and check there flyers. they have sales on cb's quite a bit. also stop by truck stops. sometimes you can catch package deals at a good price. once you get one you will want one in all your trucks.

Ugh! Ranger down! I’ve been limping the 3.0 trying to get by until I swap in my 4.0.
The 3.0 has now developed a hard miss. Today I pulled the plugs to take a look, #3 was extremely oil fouled.
A quick compression check revealed, in order, cylinders 1-6:
87psi
115psi
0 (ZERO) psi
115psi
115psi
115psi
The swap just became a bit of a higher priority but, I leave for China on the 4th. It looks like I’ll be in Columbia or Alabama most of February.
I would love to make a trip like this but I’m just not sure I can have the motor swapped in time. Hopefully I can find a way to make it happen.

Alright a little update on the trail. Just want to see what everyone thinks of this. Ive found another .GPX file on the K-Trail. This is a little different from the one I previously posted. This one is on the Central Overlander website which is a great resource for stuff like this. Ive learned a lot about the area from reading over there. This particular file is the route a group of guys from over their took. I trust this one a little more since it is not from a motorcycle website. They started in Hot Springs and ended in Clayton. We obviously wont be going quite that far unless something changes. It looks to be roughly around 100 miles and we will get up to 2,433ft. We would follow this from the dark blue, through the light blue, and would be ending in that weird sea green type color under Dallas, Arkansas at the "Wolf Pen Gap west trailhead" picture.
Here is the link to the .gpx file.
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B0PxUaN1d1OZZTQ2YWQyNDYtYjNjNC00ZDY2LThmO GQtNmQ0YjU3MDRhODMw&hl=en&authkey=CMfG2JkP
When you download it you will then need to upload it to this website if you want to view it on your computer. You can select what you want to view it in. I like google earth.

Something else to consider in all of this is the weather.......
I've been following the farmers almanac this year and its been pretty spot on. Its calling for stormy weather for the region for the 16th-19th.
I'm just throwing this out there.
I'm not sure if I'm going to make it this trip or not. Depends on my funds, a couple of things have came up and I need tires for the B2. Also starting the SAS on my other B2.
I'm still considering it tho.....

It Looks like by the map we would get off the trail on highway 71 to get to Mena? Then either part ways to home or turn around and take the trail back? I'm stoked for this trip! Already started to prepare my truck. Spare Hubs, u joint, and electric fan; check!

You would need a 4x4 a4ld with a 4.0L torque converter, a manual BW 1350 or 1354 T-case with the shift linkage for an automatic trans. And Dana 28 with the drop brackets and springs. Then driveshafts. All of it could come off a donor rig for cheap. And it sounds like country0001 is willing to work a deal with you. Too bad I sold my front and rear axles with matching 4.10 gears for 200 over the summer.

Well it looks a little more in depth than simply swapping it all straight over. We would have to remove the engine crossmember and install one from a 4X4. I think im going to have to pass on it unfortunately.

does anyone that's planning to go have a winch?? It looks as though my cousin won't be able to make it and I really don't want to try this without one. I don't think it has any bad/hard spots but I really don't want to have to walk out either. I'm kinda lazy like that.

I wanna do this, I just feel like I'm not ready. My 4wd's work just fine, its the auxillary equipment that bothers me. I've got a few more bugs to work out. I probably wont be ready this time. But I'm getting closer.

I feel that the more of us there are the better prepared we will be Country. Looks like this is doable. Between all of us there is no reason for each of us to have, say a shovel, but if 1 or 2 of us carry one then I would think that would be sufficient. This way none us will feel as though we have to go and spend alot of money to buy supplies/equipment we currently don't own.
I cut a page out of 4 Wheel Off Road that has recommended equipment. I don't know how to load a page so I guess I'll have to type it in.
I'll type it in and mark the items I have or plan to have before. Then we can see what all we have between us. Sound good?

And this last one is just a recommendation from me....pistol and ammo!
Don't know how many of you are familiar with SE Oklahoma....this area is an area where people are different (to be polite). Also this part of the state use to supply our country with some of the best pot grown in the Nation. They still grow quite a bit now but I guess meth is the new fad.
As for other mammals in that area: bear, coyotes, bobcats and mountain lions. Bigfoot is also rumored to live in the mountains down there too.

Well unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to make the trip. I'm not happy about it at all but I've just had too many issues come up with the truck. I just don't think the suspension can handle it right now and I still haven't discovered if I have an issue with the wheel bearings. The truck has started making lots of odd noises everytime I hit a bump and there are some new vibrations while I drive. I've been planning on replacing all the bushings eventually but I did not expect to need to do it so soon. I just can't afford to fix the truck right now and I surely can't afford to fix the truck and also pay for fuel for the trip. Sorry guys. Hopefully I will be able to make the trip later this year. If those that are still going would like the. GPX file of the route just let me know and I can send it your way. :(

Well its a sad sad month. I sold my ranger. I was very tight on money, so it had to go. That means that I will not make the trip, but it sounds like most others can't make it either. The good news is, I am going to look at another ranger tomorrow. I know I just sold my other one, but this one is very cheap and I can build it up just the way my old one was over time.
