I am looking to buy a set of torches for working on the truck and around the house. I already know that I am looking at a set of Smith Toughcuts, but I am back and forth on what to use for fuel. Smith sells a outfit for either propane or acetylene for about the same price. Right now I am leaning toward the propane rig because we have 4 propane tanks lying around and from what I have read even though it burns at a lower temperature the propane puts out more BTUs so its essentially a wash, and would save me the cost of a tank rental. On the other hand I have never used propane before and use acetylene all the time at work. However it is expensive and hard to transport.

So what have you guys used, and what do you like?

If it makes any difference to anyone I have no plans to weld with the setup, only for heating and cutting.

For heating and cutting, propane and MAPgas are fine.

Propane is cheap, run it.

Thanks. I keep hearing conflicting information on it, people either love it or hate it, and while it wouldn't be a big deal to switch one setup to the other I would rather get it right the first time.
