So I just picked up a haynes manual, and was just thumbing through it when I noticed that they never list the 97 and older 2.3l?? it lists 2001-2005, 2006 and later, and then the 2.5l 1998-2001, but not the 97 and older. WTF is up with that!?

Those manuals aren't even good TP.
Throw it away and find a set of factory books. I've got them for everything--mostly off Ebay. Failing that, I've had to buy a few from helminc.com. Chiltons and Haynes are good for shimming a rocky piano or starting a fire, so your $20 isn't a complete waste.

From what I can tell, the Mitchell manuals are very close to the factory manuals. They're what I normally use (although if I do have a Haynes manual and it happens to contain the info I need, it's what I'll have at the truck since I don't care about getting greasy handprints all over it.
The problem is that they try and cover too broad range of years in one book. I have a shop manual for my Ford Tempo, it is only specific to the 1993 model year and it's thicker than a Hayes that covers 84-94. And it doesn't even include wiring diagrams. I got frustrated with Hayes and Clinton's when I noticed that every time I looked something up, it told you what you already knew and not what you needed to know.

And I can't stand how they aren't specific on bolt sizes/strengths etc. Its the little sh%t your gonna look up! I personally have alldata and plenty mechanic friends who love getting alldata updates from me lol. Every car from 82 to 2011 but man its a hard drive eater. I think its up to 250 gigs now! Lol
