How much play is normal for the rear axles? None? A quarter inch? A half (I doubt that one).

I was was shaking my bed back and forth trying to find any thing loose or loosening and heard a slight clunking, went to the other side and did this again and got the same thing. Tomorrow I am changing the brakes all the way around the truck just to satisfy one of my quirps, I while there, will be checking thhe torque on the bolts holding the axle.

These axles can make a hell of a lot of noise from the c clip axles sliding in and out of the housing. Other than a c clip eliminator kit I haven't heard of any way to reduce it. Normal play should be way less than 1/4", only the space from the axle shaft end to the spider cross shaft. You can pobably find specs in the tech section.

Let me tell you... You'll know if the C-clip goes with drum rears :(

But 1/4" as Tim said should be find.

The 8.8 has pretty strong c-clips too. I have never heard of or seen a failure, unlike the Jeep D35 c-clips which blow up all the time.

My 7.5 C-clip failed once...

Only time I ever lowered my truck :)
Thankfully it was on the trail.

I don't think I've seen a broken c-clip on a Jeep rear D35 myself (broken shafts I've completely lost count of, but the c-clip is always still there in the side gear of the diff).

Yeah as said, some in/out play is normal (I would say more like up to 1/8".) As the clutch pack on a L/S diff wears, the play will increase.
