I have a 1996 2.3L reg cab 5 spd with 3.73 gears in it now. The person before me put on bigger tires than O E. I just realized two things My speedo and odometer are off, and it changed my final gearing (no wonder the truck has less guts, and gas mileage seems low) I used the calculators provided and it suggested upgradeing to a 4.10. My question is this If I put in the new gears will that put my speedo and odometer back to reading accurately or will I still need to change the speedo gear,
Thanks,
Steve

I have a 95 Ranger with the 2.3 and 31" rubber. It also came stock with the 3.73 ratio......GUTLESS, to say the least. I ended up changing out to 4.56's and that returned me back to stock gearing with that size rubber.

As far as the speedo, mine was off as well but my speedometer is driven by the ring gear. There's a magnetic pickup device on it similar to the CPS. Once I switched gears the speedo returned to normal.

Thanks for the reply! I use this truck for a dd and can't wait to give it a little more power. I am going to look for a new or used set of gears and put them in I'm sure it will help out from what I have read,
Thanks

I have a 96, reg cab, 5spd, 2wd :)
With 4.10's and 31's, my speedo is dead on. trucks within 50rpm of where it was with the 195 60 14's and the 3.45s
