Hi guys! noob here with a few questions.
I used to be into Jeeps, did several frame-offs, and have some parts left over and am wondering if they could be used for a SAS.
Axles are a Dana 44 rear, and a Dana 27 front.
Front axle is 51" wheel to wheel, rear is 50.5" wheel to wheel. Dana (Spicer) 18 transfer case. Sping perches are 28" front and rear, but that can be changed by welding on new perches.
I was wondering, could these be used in a first gen SAS? Are these axles way too narrow? I mean an inch or two could be made up for with wheel backspacing, but much more than that would make the vehicle unstable, not to mention hard on bearings due to the excessive backspacing that would be required.
I know they're drum brakes, but can be converted, and I know the rear pumpkin is offset to the pass. side, but so is the Xfer case, so that's not such a big deal. I know the 27 is considered by some a fairly weak axle too.
Remember I am simply in the research stage at this time, and the truck will not see any hardcore offroading, or rocks, only an occasional muddy field or a snow covered road.
I know this might seem like a silly thing to do to most of you, but I am looking for input on this solely because I already have these axles and case on hand.
