A couple years ago dad picked up a 1955 gas Case 400 tractor. It was a basket case with the heads off and block cracked… but it was all there. So it went to the back of the fridge to chill until a solution came up, and it did in the form of a good running 1960 Case 830 gas being parted out in Kansas. So he drug the engine home and my brother and I are going to help him swap the 251 (4” bore x 5” stroke) for the 830’s 284 (4.25” x 5” stroke) it also has bigger valves and an extra point of compression that takes it from 53hp to 65hp on the PTO. The beautiful part of this swap is, aside from the tin the rest of the tractor is essentially the same as the donar so no durability or cooling issues should crop up.

Kind of amazing how tall the thing is, kinda wonder what it weighs too...

Either the rear seal or the softplug is leaking, both are going to be replaced.

Had to buy the "good" clutch to get the flywheel which is a different part number from the 400's. Since they are no longer available it wasn't worth the chance to let it go. The clutch probably worked good but it isn't good enough to put back in considering the work to get at it. Splitting a tractor isn't much fun... especially if you were just there.

It will be very sweet. In many ways I prefer tractors to trucks, if something is in your way you just remove it... and there is a lot less trivial crap to get in the way.

Go ahead and post up the Ferd :icon_thumby:

I started one a couple years ago, it is probably a long ways down the list by now.

I fixed the title for you.

I'm going to follow this thread, as I'm partial to the old iron. My family has several older JD garden tractors, and a Farmall Super A-Industrial. The Farmall is my grandfather's still used weekly with a Woods L59 belly mower. The plan is a complete resto one of these days.
Here's what it's supposed to look like, I kind of like the industrial yellow, it's growing on me at least...

Thanks for the title fix. :icon_thumby:

Is there anything that makes a AI any different than a standard A? I know most of the row crops had an I equivelant but I didn't really know that bled over into the little guys too. Kinda weird they went with the AI name instead of the regular letter and number name (like I-4, an H industrial) BTW, Standard treads and industrials were called "International", adjustable tread row-crops were "Farmall"

I ran the 4020 home and we got the engine switched from the pickup to a trailer so we can move it around easier. I got it backed into the garage tonight so it is out of the weather, I also got some gaskets and seals ordered that will be in the next couple days (old reformed IH dealer doesn't have much NOS Case stuff) I had to get the block casting number so tomorrow I can get the soft plug coming too.

There is a tractor thread in the "photo and video" forum too.

We triple teamed it last night and are four bolts away from the front half of the tractor falling off in two pieces. We need to bring home the 4020 with a loader to take it apart from here. The front bolster will come off first... which will be a PITA with the steering shaft that reaches clear under the fuel tank will have to snake through the block. The block should be cake.

We got the engine pulled out last night. :yahoo:

The steering shaft was a bugger to get out of the yoke on the fuel tank, otherwise it went pretty smooth.

Took the front pedestal off, set the front bolster on the liftgate of dad's service truck and removed the bolts and slowly pulled it away (and to the shop to clean out) Then brought in the 4020 with a loader bucket (wish it had the boom instead but we didn't have time to switch) and pulled the engine out. It was kind of a bugger, because of the bucket the engine wanted to spin and it jammed the PTO powershaft in the flywheel and was trying to pull it out too. With a little working it came free.
