Some background.. 89 BII, 2.9L auto 4x4.. i had water in the oil so pulled the heads and had a large crack in one. I've gotten everything put back together and in process also replaced the following: plugs, wires, obviously all gaskets, and other assorted hoses/cables.

I finally got it started the other day but haven't had the time to get the timing dialed in. It'll start on the first little bump but it's running rough... like it wants to die but then revs back up and is fine for a sec.. repeating that pattern.

My questions is, does that sound like the timing just needs to be set or am I looking at PCV valve, EGR, misc sensor problems, or possibly something else?..

By the way, thanks for all the help.

Actually that sounds like a vacuum leak, might check around the lower intake, especially at the ends if you just used the gaskets. I ALWAYS use RTV instead in those areas. But first of course it getting the timing dialed in then hunt for anything else after that as new rebuilds can have growing pains but it is always nice to have them start right up! Good luck!
