I was wondering if I should install a K&N filter in my 94 explorer 4.0, or do a cold air intake mod and put a K&K on it.
Will I notice a difference?
How much of an improvement does the Cold air intake offer over stock in terms of mpg and acceleration? How much over just a K&N filter?

It'll make no difference in acceleration or MPG. It may change sound, but thats about it. The K&N filter by itself is junk and so are the Cold Air Intakes in my opinion. They also cause problems with MAF sensors. Just stick with the stock set up, it's a real cold air intake and provides more than enough air with the current intake mainfold, TB, and heads.

+1........The only advantage is a lighter wallet!!

Any advantages that the K&N cold air intake offers is at 6,000 rpm, and it's only like 3hp. How often do you take it up to this range? Also, if you do any off-roading, that open filter on the CAI becomes a threat to your engine. It's open to water and muck, and mud. There is no way to seal it.

Leave it stock, and as Bob mentions your wallet will thank you.

Your engine will thank you too!! You won't have to worry about contaminated MAF sensors, gummed up IAC valves, or gummed up throttle bodies from the dirt and oil passed with the K&N filters!

Well I guess I will leave it stock then.
I have a fram tough guard filter that I can use in this truck, is that considered to be a good one?

Not really, but it doesn't matter nearly as much as people might lead you to believe.

It's adequate.

MAKG, what filter would you recommend?

I usually use house brand at a parts store. Like Wicks, etc.
