Here's a pic the guy sent me of the transmission I'm buying today. He claims it only has like 25,000 miles on it. I asked him "are you sure only 25,000 miles" and he said yes because he blew the motor. It's out of a 2000 Ranger. He was asking $300 on Craigslist for it but I got him down to $200.

What do you guys recommend I look for? Thanks. You have to click on "view slideshow" for a bigger pic. Thanks

Well, first, make sure it fits your 2.3L. A V6 M5OD isn't going to do you much good.

Take the top cover off and get a good look at all the gear faces, looking for anything but nice polished contact patches. Feel the mainshaft for floppiness. Take a paper towel and wipe the inside of the case, to see what comes off. Gray or black goo = bad. The drain plug is better, but it may have been cleaned off. Put the transmission in gear (any gear) and test how much the stick rotates (might need bushings). Shift it into all gears and rotate the input shaft, listening for unexpected noises or difficulty shifting.

Ok, thanks Mike.

I'll be leaving home in the next couple of hours to go look at it closer. I'll check for all that when I get there. It looks pretty clean from the pic but I know that's not a good indication of what's going on inside.

I'd be a bit concerned that a racer had been "powershifting" it. That can destroy the blocking rings. You can test that by pushing the slider (or stick, if it's fully assembled) toward, but not into, a gear, and rotating the input shaft and observing the output to see if it grabs. Do that for every gear. Count the number of input rotations to get one output rotation, to make sure it's rotating at the gear you think it is (all you need to do is to make sure they are all different -- and it's surprisingly hard to eyeball this; you have to count).

25,000 miles may be "low," but this is not a young transmission if it has been subject to race conditions. I suspect you might do better at Pick'n'Pull.

Well that's the problem. I'm on a budget and the local pick-n-pulls don't have the tranny. I did find one last week in a 93 Ranger but I found service records indicating that the truck had 235,000 miles. That's a little too much for me.

This guy actually did'nt tell me he raced or anything, that was just my assumption because he said it was in a "prerunner". I assumed he was racing/bajaing it in order to fry the engine with such low mileage. Sorry, I should of made that clear. I stated that he said he raced it, but he did'nt, that was me guessing. Sorry again. I'm hoping it's a good deal though as right now anything's better then what I have. I'm scared my tranny's going to go out on my way to pick it up....lol.

I'll check what you said though as I have no idea what to look for.
