I'm looking at a crate engine, I've seen anything from 302's to 306's in the 300-325 HP range, nothing to crazy but something that has "oomph"

My question is what's a good company to order one through, looking to spend approx. $2500-$3500.

It's for a first gen ranger, also if you suggest one, if you can suggest a transmission to please, auto or manual,

Truks main use will be highway daily driver/fun truck

My GT40 crate motor came from Summit. Made by Ford w/aluminum heads.

Back in '96 the Ford crate motor was a deal....today a well built shortblock with aftermarket aluminum heads that flow better that the GT40s are affordable.

Set a HP goal. Then build towards that and buy parts once!:icon_thumby:

Take it from me, it will save you a LOT of money!:icon_twisted:
 
Is your budget -here is 3500 ,where is my engine?or piecemeal but 3500 is top dollar? If it is the former I really like the FORD turn key deal .if it is the latter PLEASE do not skimp-I put together a 347 with chinesse knock off heads ,ignition ,manifold -$1750.00 356rwhp in an 88 fox hatch -it lasted a month! car is STILL running a used crown vic motor 2 years later
 
I wanna spend around 3500 on the engine alone. Transmission, axles, etc not included. Those I will salvage off donor vehicles. I just want a fresh engine, that looks good and will be reliable. The while project I want to keep under $8000. Which I think will be easy considering I'm getting the ranger for free, and the body/interior needs next to no work at all.
 
Was looking at edelbrock engines, no prices listed anyone know what they go for? Pushing out more HP so I'm guessing they run from $6000-$8000 lol, but no idea

I guess crate motors are great for 2wd, I'm not sure how to makem 4x4... I'd of bought one if I was 2wd... Then again... I'd have a good suspension first if I was 2wd...

The main difference would be cam selection. For most of 4x4 applications, you want something with a milder cam, than what you'd order for a perfromance application. Be that as it may, the Ford crate 5.0's come with pretty mild hyd roller cams (B303 and E303) which are about at the upper limit for what you'd want to use in a 4x4.
