How do I get the fuel pump on my 89 ranger to run constantly in the run position? (for the carb?)

fuel pump

You could take that Red/Ltgreen wire that i told you about before, splice a lead off of that and run that to the Red or Hot on the fuel pump, and run the black to the ground. Or you could run the fuel pump to a switch in your truck so that you could shut it off anytime...

R/LG to the T/LG wire that goes to the fuel pump relay and the diagnostic connector. There should be a red/light green wire coming off of the main relay next to the fuel pump relay. You could do all your wireing in that one area near the fuel pump relay.

That would still keep the safety of having the inertia switch, and no long ugly wires to run.

The R/LG is the crank/ run power, and the T/LG wire is the fuel pump enable wire coming from the computer. So basically you do exactly what the computer would have done.

^^Thanks, that's a good idea..found the T/LG wire...do I splice in the red/green and leave the tan hooked up to both sides or do I leave the wire loose going to the relay? (just trying to prevent blowing a fuse)

Oh, and btw, I wonder how much quickly the fuel pump will fail if having to run all the time? I may have to go mechanical sometime in the future......

i would cut the T/LG wire that goes to the computer and on the non computer side of the wire tap it into the R/LG(if you power the T/LG wire all the way to the computer, it might fry something).

This will make the pump run whenever the key is in the run position. For more safety you might want to run a switch of some kind into the cab so that you can turn the pump off if you want the ignition on, or even as a vehicle disable.

Use a hidden switch to serve a multi-purpose vehicle disable, or fuel pump shut off switch if later on down the road you need to diagnose something where you need the ignition on, but your not running the truck and you want the pump off.

An easy way to do this would be to do the same wire the R/LG to the T/LG, then for the switch you could use the PK/BK wire on the inertia switch. Cut it and wire each side to a toggle switch. Nice and easy, no running wires and you've got a

take it off and put a carb pump on it...carbs dont work so well with 40 psi. and dont say youll regulate it down, itll burn the pump up. oh...and the pump runs all the time anyway as soon as you start it. whats an extra 2 seconds gonna do?

You can also run a hot wire off the coil hot, run from there to the inertia switch, then to the pump. That's how I did mine and it's been doing the job now for 6 years. I'm using a 30 gal/hr low pressure electric.

huh??? To keep from burning it up you run a return back to the tank (which is what I did) and the pump does not run all the time.....when you switch the truck on the pump comes on temporarily and then shuts back off......

And if anyone's interested: the run wire (red/green) to the tan/green does NOT make the pump come on.....when I put the tan/green to ground then the pump came on....so I ran a ground wire over the the negative battery from the tan/green going into the relay and the pump runs whenever the key switch is in run........:derisive:

Ok so i had it backwards, it grounds threw the computer... even easier to do then. I still say toss a toggle switch or something on one of the inertia switch wires tho.

Thats good. I'm glad to hear your going to. Sorry safety and common sence is a pet peev of mine. It just makes good sence to put a $2 switch on just in case, for whatever reason.
