Just a quick question.What is the diff between 97 4.0 and newer.Junk yards say 98 up wont replace 97 4.0.I dont really see any major diff.all are vin x.I think even explorer ohv 4.0 will also fit.? Thanks for the help.
 
In 97 the block was recast for better NVH qualities. Around 98 the Explorer was switched to the SOHC engine, and that was different.

Ranger engines up to 01 should be fine as long as you swap over the sensors and intake.
