Stupid racing bet...

Okay, so for fun I bet my co-worker I could race and beat his 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix with my '88 Ranger. Just looking at the specs...

Standard Engine 2.9L 140 hp V6
Horsepower 140
Torque (lb-ft) 170

Standard Engine 3.8L 200 hp V6
Horsepower 200 @ 5200 RPM
Torque (lb-ft) 225 @ 4000 RPM

Okay, so there's a few differences. I'm RWD (obviously) and he's FWD. I'm 5-Speed manual, and he's automatic.

Not even sure if I'm going to win. Probably not. Thoughts?
 
Lol, you don't have a snowball's chance in Hell. Your friend has a car, that's 13 years newer, with a bigger motor.


Also, hope you're not racing on the street.
 
First thought to my mind; I hope you didn't bet very much.

However, my friend has an 89 Ranger with a 2.9 that beat a 73 Chevelle with a 350 in an 1/8th mile (roughly) race.

I do think the Grand Prix's got you though.


EDIT: The Chevelle was an absolute pile of trash....
 
Sadly, I think the Pontiac has you.
Two reasons
1: Engine that old probably is only pushing 110hp/135ftlbs
2: fwd car with bigger and newer motor
 
yes theyre good motors they came in alot of gm cars theyre very quick an i know for sure it would beat the ranger.I have seen alot of them motors in gm cars like cavalier an sunfire...it isnt stock to theses cars neither. car vs truck isnt a race..I hope you didnt put any money on the bet.. man what i say when it comes to raceing i say you might be able to beat me on the track but lets go to the mud an see whos comes out in one piece not millions

Neither the caviler or the sunfire came with a V6. they both had a base 2.2 motor which was junk and like to eat headgaskets and waterpumps and the Sunfire GT and the caviler Z24 both came with a 2.4 a much better motor than the 2.2 but it was also junk. Quick cars when new but very poor reliablity. Same with the 3.8 V6 might be quick but they don't last long and they are a pain to work on. My mom has one in her monte carlo and it's a absolute shit whole. She won't even drive the car anymore cause she don't want to get stranded again. Countless times I've had to go get her of fallow her into town. Wast of time and money IMO.

What years are you talking about? My aunt had an 85 with a 2.8 V6.

The years they made both the cavalier and the sunfire. I guess it safe to say they never offered a V6 in the sunfire. I might have been wrong about the V6 bu they never put the 3.8 in it. BTW that quad 4 was a shit pile too.
 
An so you know I'm not talking out of my ass here the '96 Z24 we had before the Focus. My wife owned a '97 with a 2.2 before that one, and I had a '90 grand am with the quad 4 for my first car. The first and last GM car I will ever own.

Stupid racing bet...
 
GM has definitely made their mark when it comes to garbage motors. I wouldn't want a single one of those motors on that list.

Good on you for switching to a Focus.
 
The Series 1 3.8 is probably one of GM's better motors. my 88 and 94 Olds Delta 88 had them, and when I got rid of both cars at just shy of 200k, they were running great, the 88 did not burn a drop of oil, and the 94 used less than a half quart between oil changes. Both had great acceleration and no issues. Both of these cars consistently got 30mpg on the highway too, and they were huge cars.

I think what jammer said in his email was that these cars did not come stock with the 3.8, but he has seen them with it (someone did a 3.8 swap to upgrade)
