Broken crosspin retainer bolt

Stock 7.5, bad wheel bearing. Went to remove the C-Clips and the crosspin retainer bolt broke. Only about 1/2 inch of the bolt came out, rest still in there. Need opinions on drilling it out, putting in a thread repair and reinstalling another bolt. Soon to be daily driver and I have found a few affordable complete rear ends. Seems a sketchy repair to me, bolt backing out at speed would be an epic failure.

I just had to replace my cross pin...it did come out at high speeds! ouch! anyway to my surprise the lock bolt didnt break the cross pin did...I was able to remove the gear assy since the pin was broke loose which made it a little easier to get a good angle on the lock bolt but I still needed to use an easy-out to get it out and it was not easy!
 
For future reference, take a propane torch and heat up the carrier where the bolt is before removing it, I've done at least 10 7.5s and 8.8s and never broken a retaining bolt.
 
Heat is your friend here. The retaining bolt has red locktite on it, and we all know red locktite requires 450* of heat before it softens and "unlocks" = no broken retaining bolt :icon_thumby:

Remember to put red locktite back on it when you put it back together. The heat cycling will destroy blue locktite (the blue means "cold" or removable without heat). The bolt is too small to put a lot of torque on it, so thus it requires red locktite to retain it in the harsh environment it is subjected too. :D

PS, there is only 3/8" of threads on the retaining bolt, the rest is a smooth surface. The threads only exist up but the bolt head itself.
 
it's actually yellow loctite, or has been on every cross pin I've taken out, along with all drive yoke bolts... but yeah, it holds like red loctite :)

In the 3 I've taken apart they've been red? And the replacement ones had red on it when I bought them :icon_confused:

Yellow doesn't seem to be available @ my stores. Must be a factory thing? Its not listed on LockTite's website either.

Yellow = Red = Heavy duty (they have the same mat'l data sheet specs or close), heat resistant, shock resistant ect ect. basically won't every come apart by its own self :D Short of tack welding, they work really good lol.
 
I took cross pins out of my current 8.8, my dana old 28, current 35, p;d 7.5. None snapped, none took more than my basic 3/8 wrench to get out.
