problem:

A friend of mine was drivin back to school from walmart and he said that his speedometer went right to zero, check enigine light went on, and his abs light came on. its a 2000 2wd 2.5 ranger. we dont have a code scanner but does anyone have somewhat of an idea what coulda happend? any info would be sweet.

sounds like the rear speed sensor in the rear diff took a poop on him.

so that sensor sets off the ABS light too? ill let him know and see if he can get it down to the automotive shop here at school n have them scan it

The sensor (if indeed the VSS) is in the transmission near the tailshaft. Labor will not cost much, book time should only be 0.8-1 hour labor, but the part will probably cost quite a bit. Yes, it will illuminate the abs lamp because the abs system cannot properly operate unless it knows how fast the vehicle is going. Josh
