Long story short... I got a 1979 suzuki 370 dual sport for a good price. It will start up with ether in it but wont start normaly. My question is ...... The kill switch is broken right now and the wires are just kinda hanging, so since its not connected would that stop it from allowing it to start?

well since it starts with either..i would say that doesn't have anything to do with it. check ur fuel lines and makes sure that they r getting fuel to the carb then i would make sure that the carb isn't clogged up if that doesn't work...

yeh i tore the carb apart and did what i could. made sure all the jets were clear. and put a think wire through all the needles. the carb is definitely getting gas to it. But.. the ether would bipass where the fuel comes from, right?

If it starts on ether, no. You may have an old plug, maybe dirty carb or clogged lines. Is this a 2 stroke or 4? How long was it sitting?

Its a 4 stroke. Lines are clear, gas runs freely out of them if unhooked. It was ridden last year.

Make sure you are getting a good spark. Weak spark can fire ether but not gas

Thanks guys for giving me some input. I ended up taking the carb back off and cleaning it much more thoroughly, filled up the gas tank, and changed the spark plug. Starts like a champ now! Now i just wish the air filter wasnt $55 since i need a new one.

But here are some pictures of my retro beauty! Its only.... 32 years old....
