I have aquired a 1987 Ford F150 4x4 that states on the sticker on the drivers side door jam was manufactured 9/87, but when going to auto parts store it doesn't list the correct engine size for that year.

If looking up parts for a 1988 it will list the correct engine size and vin code which is a vin H for the 8th digit. It has the 5.8L 351W which I believe is the Windsor engine.

Is it normal to show a manufacture date of 9/87 but specify 88 when looking up parts? When looking up parts for 87 it only shows the engine vin of N which is for the 5.0

Just thought it was strange.

The truck is on the verge of being an 88. My books and research shows a H in the vin of the 87 which is still a 351W. There is no difference between the 351's of those years so if you order parts for the 88 and they go on the 87 that is fine.

I always thought Ford changed over in late July for the model year change over which would made Sept '87' build date a '88' model. What's the first number of the VIN? That should tell you what model year.

Thanks for the information gentleman. I picked up the vehicle before getting the registration card and title but did order the parts I needed for a 88 model. It has a leaking exhaust manifold and needs a good tune up. Started with fresh battery after sitting for one year but would not keep idle and would stall. Hopefully, should be easy fix and be road ready soon.
