Gearing for 33's with 4.0

I have looked at the gear calculator and still can't decide. I have a '94 ranger x-cab 4x4 with a 4.0/5spd and 31's, right now im running 3.73's. I am upping to 33's soon and am torn between 4.10's and 4.56's I Definitely plan to do some freeway driving 70-75mph, maybe more for extended periods of time but not all that often. I am leaning towards 4.10's but don't want to regret it later.

Any advice from someone who has a similar setup?
 
33's with 4.10s will be like you 31's with 3.73's. If you feel you'd like a little more power climbing, etc... def go with 4.56's...
 
i have the 4.56 ring and pinion in my rear diff and im runnin 33's, it runs awsome for me. always has plenty of power and it hauls ass int he dirt and sand.. i also have the 3.0 in my ranger.. freeway driving at 70-75mph the rpms sit 2,500-3,000, i dont know how that wil be ont he 4.0, i would imagine they would be lower but i dont know if you have a manual or automatic..
 
He has the 5spd.
 
go 4.56!! its the best
 
With a 5 spd stick I'd go with 4.56's. First gear in a Ranger manual tranny ain't all that low. Your clutch will thank you.

um no......sorry...I am running 35's, 4.56's, and a manual transmission. It runs GREAT......4.56 gears would be too much gear for that truck running 33's...


4.10's if you MUST change gears.....i would stick with the 3.73's in the manual transmission and wait till you decide to get 35's to swap gears....gear changes are expensive.......3.73's will give you better highway fuel economy and 4.10's will give you better city fuel economy.....

the manual transmission 1st gear is LOWER than the automatic 1st gear......with a manual there isn't as much power loss as with an automatic....4.56's would be too much gear for a manual transmission and 33's......



REMEMBER, HIS TRUCK IS A 4.0
 
4.0 with a .79 Overdrive gear and 4.56's put you at about 2751 RPM at 75mph
should be 2473 with 4.10's. :icon_bounceblue: Climb hills in OD

If you go with 4.56s, then when it comes time to step up to 35"s, you will be all set. :D
 
I have a 4.0, 5-speed, 3.73's and 33's and am pretty happy with it. I do have to downshift on larger hills but other than that it has enough power. I can take off in 2nd without much clutch slippage. There are times that I think about changing the gears but this is something that I can currently live with.

I do need to change the speedo gear so I can check my mileage and see if the larger tires are hurting my MPG to much. Anybody changed theirs and know which one I need?

I plan on adding a doubler which will help off-road without hurting on-road.

the 4.10's,33's and a 2.9l in my truck aren't very inspiring but with a 4.0l it would be a different story.i commuted in my truck so i took the 4.56's out of my truck for the 4.10's in it now.you can get 4.10 axles from the wrecker cheaper too.i agree with johnny o though-first gear feels pretty tall in these trucks with the equivalent(4.10 and 33's) of a 3.55 geared truck with stock tires.if you tow or use it heavy the clutch will definately fail earlier.
 
I'm runnin 4.10s in my Choptop with the 2.9 and some OLD bias ply 33's... it goes great like that... BUT, it doesn't crawl as well as I would have liked, even in 4lo. I'm looking at going to 35's here in the near future and I'm just not sure anymore if 4.56 would be good enough for me or if I should go 4.88 or even 5.13 just so that I have a better crawl range. At the same time, I know I'm gonna be driving it a good bit on the road... so I think it comes down to preference...

IMHO, 4.10 or 4.56 would be good... it just depends on how slow you want to be able to crawl without doing a doubler.
 
My jeeper buddy is runnin 4.88s and 33x12.5s with a 4.0L. I know it's a different vehical, but that thing hauls!
