My 1994 fuel-injected ranger seems to be running fairly rich and I'm not sure how to adjust this.

Idling it smells pretty bad, even though I get 16-17 MPG or so. I have a check engine light on the dash but haven't taken it to the dealer to get diagnosed yet, I was hoping it's something I could do myself.

It's got the 2.3 4-cyl, manual, with distributor-less ignition and dual plugs per cylinder. Could an O2 sensor cause something like this? Should I worry about trying to lean it out or just leave it? I don't want to invest a lot into this truck, it's just transportation to school till I get my street bike.
