View Full Version : Keep ABS with SAS?

For a variety of reasons I've narrowed my lift options down to doing a SAS on my '05. My only concern is retaning the ABS. Has anyone done both on a similer truck? Are there any aftermarket kits that will let me install the Ford tone ring on a solid axle? Will other manufacturers ABS tone rings work with the Ford ABS?

Should I ask this in the brake forum? I considered that but since it deals with non-stock parts I figured I'd get better info here.

Sorry if this has been covered, search didn't turn up anything on ABS.

im not sure how to do it but...

if you plan on doing anything "hardcore" crawlin down steep hills and such is very scary with ABS.
i have seen in a magazine before a switch to turn abs on or off... would be smart to look into that if you plan on doing what i said. dont know where to get them or if it helped your question at all.

might want to try Pirate4x4.com/forum under ford section you will get alot faster responces there but post back here and let us know what you find

Thanks, I'll check Pirate. Thanks too for the mention of the off switch, good idea before I do any off-roading.

I think your best bet for getting the ABS hooked up is to scavenge the sensors and tone rings (or rotors) off a '94-'96 fullsize Bronco or F-150 D44, and try to modify the axle your swapping in (I assume also a D44 of some sort) to accept the sensors.

I don't think there are any retrofit kits out there.

Whatever you do to your truck you need to have a toothring identical to the original any other toothring that have not the same number of tooth or the same tooth pattern will generate a code and put your ABS off.

Thanks for the responses. A couple searchs on the Pirate Forum led me to the same conclusions.

One item I forgot about was the rack and pinion steering. My last project vehicle was a CJ7 and I didn't have to think about the steering gear. If I decide to go with this swap I'll need to convert the steering too.

I may be better off finding a little older truck to start building, this one is awfully nice to start cutting up.

On edit: Found a straight, high milage '93 for $700 to build, the '05 is spared.

If you are gonna be wheelin the truck, ABS is a total waste of time. It's very dangerous to have ABS on the trail, as someone mentioned.

DieselSmoke's idea is a good one...

Keep the ABS for when your on the road, have a switch (or tie it in with the 4WD indicator circuit) to disable it while offroad.

I wonder if using 93-94 fullsize dana 44 ttb rotors and tone rings on a straight axle 44 would work.I know this is an old thread. But I am thinking of doing this to replace a dana 35 ttb with abs.Anyone have any thoughts?
