NY inspections?

I am moving to Syracuse in three days, but i won't be registering the truck with the state of new york until July (current insurance is up then). I was curious to see what all they do to pass your car so you can get it licensed and such?
 
I dunno exactly what they check, but judging by some of the NY vehicles we get from auction, their inspection program is as big of a joke as our emissions program.
 
I was told they just go over it to make sure that there are no lights on, and that everything safety wise works..but i don't know how true that is.
 
It all depends on who your inspector is... I've had the full gamut, from those that just plug into the OBD for the emissions test and slap a sticker on, to those that check the lights/glass/quick glance at tire tread if the vehicle looks good, to some that will throw it up on a lift to check the suspension, to one that actually did the proper full blown inspection - checking the brakes, steering, etc (to be fair, I was having an alignment done during the same visit, so they already had it up for work and the inspection was due, so I just had it done while I was there. They may have done less otherwise).

The rule of thumb, is if you tell them that you do all of your own work (or else they are your regular mechanic) and it is obvious that you keep things in decent shape, they'll just do the minimum they feel comfortable with. For the $21 an inspection costs (less if you're exempt from emissions), it just isn't worth it to spend a half hour or more combing through the full checklist (more if they take it out for a drive to check brake equalization like they're supposed to) unless they are going to get you into the shop for a repair too.

I hope they don't pull codes..i've had a CEL for around 5 years now, that won't go away no matter what i do..

F) Frame @ cracks/rust
G) Tyres @ depth of tread & condition
H) Lights (in general) all lights & hazard/4-way flasher
I) Windshield @ condition/crack(s)
J) Wiper blades
K) Horn
G) Fuel leaks
Emissions check: NY State uses a On-Board Diagnostic inspection that's connected
to the DMV computer.
A) Catalytic converter
B) EGR
C) PCV
D) AIS
E) EVAP
F) FIR
G) TAC

For the horn thing, is an aftermarket horn hooked up to a push button okay? My factory horn never worked, so i hooked up an air horn that is plenty loud.

Seatbelt condition/operation and rearview mirrors (interior and exterior) as well. If the vehicle is model year 1995 or older emissions check is visual and the vehicle does not need to be plugged in. and if it's older than 25 years old there is no emissions equipment inspection. You are allowed one OBD readiness monitor not set, you can't pull the battery terminal to put the light out, it'll fail, if the light doesn't come on with the key off (bulb burnt) it will also fail. If you fail inspection for emissions reasons only the DMV computer will print out a 10 day temporary inspection so you can fix it. Inspections are $21 and reinspections (if you fail) are $11

Yeah they pull codes.

Depending on where you go some places will let you go out in the lot and unhook your battery to clear it. Some will slap you a no inspection and make you pay for it.
 
Got the codes pulled :

P0500 (vss)

There are two vss in the car. One on the transmission (manual for me) and one on the differential..how do i know which one is bad?

PO133 (o2)
It says upper bank..so should be pretty self explanatory.

Question though. I know on my old ford contour, it had an o2 problem. I replaced the plug, but it still said that it was a problem even though the car showed no problems at all. What happens if i get everything fixed on it, but the code still pulls?

I hate to sound like an ass but if you still get the code after you've attempted to fix it, you still have a problem, if you've replaced everything to do with the code, your problem could be in the wiring, etc...

Well i haven't messed with the trucks codes..minus my speedometer not working on the interstate, it shows not other signs of problems..so ill get it fixed before i do inspections. And i might wait until december to get the truck registered with ny, as i have 6 months to do it.
 
I would think the first code would be caused by the tranmission speed sensor if the speedometer isn't working on the highway. the O2 sensor is hit or miss. Whatever you do don't go cheap on the O2 sensor. We bought a generic O2 sensor once and had wiring issues with the sensor then heater problems.
