I can get a D30 with 3.55 gears from a 89 for $150 ,but in the TRS library it says that the non disconnect D30 came out in 1990, could this be a late 89 having parts that were to be in the 90 models? Also can a set of 4.56 gears be bolted to the same carrier that the 3.55s are on? If not can the D30 carrier with a from a 86 disconnect with 4.10s be installed into the 89 front end?

The xj's with select trak t/cases came with non cad. d30's, I have one from an 88 in my shed. I can never remember what the carrier break is on these axles.

I can't remember the carrier break, but I know a few jeep guys that had older CAD axles, a popular upgrade was to either fix the disconnect in the front axle so it doesn't move and put a block-off plate on it, or to swap a newer non-disconnect shaft and use a block-off plate for the CAD. I have one like that sitting here that I was going to use for a project, but the axles are MIA and I haven't got around to getting another set.

The carrier break is 3.55 and down and 3.73 and up. The CAD didn't go away until the 96 model years. But you can use the axle from a non-CAD axle in one with the CAD system. The seal is a bit tricky to install, but it can be done. But if you do that then get both axles as the u-joints are bigger. You may have to remover the exciter ring for the ABS on the newer shafts so they will fit the older housings.
