I have a 1986 ford ranger 2.9 and the today i noticed when i hit the breaks my break pedal wasnt coming back up until i started moving again. i hit it once and it just stays down. what could be the problem?

Brake pedal stays down

You say that it releases when you get moving again? do you have to hit the gas slightly to get it moving again? Reason I ask is that it sounds like a bad power booster and when you tap the gas to get moving again the momentary increase in engine vacuum is just enough to rattle the booster piston loose again. The booster does not have to be leaking to be bad...Make sure there is not a master cylinder bypass at the rear that is allowing brake fluid to leak into the booster either. just an idea, it could be many other things based on how low the brake pedal is too. i do have to hit the gas for it to let up again.I had it sitting for a while till i had time to replace the front axle.idk if that might have anything to do with it. cuz before i parked it, the brakes where fine now i did replace the right side front brake hose because i broke the the other one when i tried reattaching it.

Really sounds like a bad brake vacumn booster. Hope you can get it sorted out!--Josh

could it be the master cylinder?

Unlikely. But anything is possible I suppose. I've seen quite a bit of wierd things in cars!! I would sy just make sure you cover the basics...make sure the calipers are ok and make sure the rear brakes are not wasted or any problems with your parking brake. Josh

This may be way too simple, but I saw this on a car one time and the answer was grease. Please don't throw anything at me.
