cat or not?

i'm going with some JBA headers and a dual cat back exhaust, my question is will it sound better, worse, louder, wit the cat converter? i know i'm suppose to have one to be street legal.. but i can make a sacrafise
 
No cat will be louder, as far as sound, that is in the ear of the beholder. Don't think you will gain any performance from removing it because you wont.
 
its against federal law to remove the cat...punishable by a hefty fine.

its against forum rules to discuss illegal activities.

a cat converter has about the same effect on your exhaust note as a glasspack.
 
i know its illegal to remove it.. but what about stock cars and all them, none of them run cat converters


illegal... yes but come one its not like were talking about murder i'm sure people do a lot of illegal things to thier cars and post it on here..

If your vehicle comes equipped with a cat, it is illegal to remove it. There are many reasons stock cars don't need them.

As far as sound, it will be slightly raspier since the empty chamber becomes a sort of resonator.

Gutted cats I think sound like shit, either remove them or don't bother IMHO.
Here's a video or two of my rig. 2 1/2" with no cats and a flowmaster 40 exiting before the tire on my 2.9. No headers but you get the idea.

because i was ignorant about catalytic converter function and design when i put the exhaust on, and i didnt have anyone to warn me before it was too late. i still dont have any installed because i havnt come up with a spare $200 or so for two cats.

believe me i hate feeling hypocritical as much as the next guy and i will be installing cats in the future.

well, if i follow this logic then i can not talk about lifting my ranger more then 7" over stock because in the state of NJ that is illegal for my truck.

the standard ranger has always had 2 cats on it as far as i know, i always cut off the secondary cat and run my exhuast at the 2 1/2?? from after the first cat. that way im still legal but i also lose the muffling capabilities of the cat....and for thos that think the cat doesnt ahve a adverse affect on sound, need to remove a cat and see what i sounds like before they give people advice
 
Both cats are cats, the second is not a resonator chamber. You do increase your trucks emission of harmfull gases even by just taking of the second one.
 
Please do not remove your catalytic converters. Your truck will be pumping out the same pollution as 100 cat-equipped vehicles. I just picked up a MAGNAFLOW catalytic converter on e-hate for 150 dollars shipped. Company called wundercarparts, they buy items in mass, sell a few things under the correct brand name at the right price, and then sell the same exact parts labeled as an in-house brand for alot less so they dont get found out by the manufacturing company. My item was labeled as a "high flow catalytic converter" when it was a magnaflow the whole time. Saved 50 dollars...something good actually came out of ebay? BTW, your power difference with/without a catalytic converter will be maybe 3-4 numbers if that. Josh

i dont care as long as i pass inspection which i do with the single catalytic converter. the second catalytic converter serves no real purpose in my experience, using a emissions tester at my work we tested with and without the second cat, and got almost identical readings with and without. just no purpose for it in my experience
 
What about newer Rangers equpped with three cats?
I have an 04 and it has two, small, pre-cats.....and one large cat further downstream.
I changed the large cat with a smaller, "high flow", cat and I'm pretty happy with it.
 
the newer rangers are OBD II systems which will be effected by removing any catalytic convertes, im talkin on the older OBD1 systems
