View Full Version : VBulletin setup input

I've seen posts about setting up VBulletin.

My concern right now is to just get the forums functioning smoothly. I need to get the top posts listed on the main TRS page again and try to figure out how to make the forums flow better.

Right off the bat I noticed that there isn't a link to start new topics in the threads.

If you see something on another VBulletin you like let me know. If you know where the settings are or how to make the changes let me know. The less I have to figure out the quicker this will go.

Anyone use Blog? Wonder if we can get that.

I see a setup for plugins. I need to figure out where to get them and what's available.

Chat. Do I dare? This is suppose to be how the hackers got in before.

I want to make sure we're taking full advantage of VBulletin.

I also saw a site that had a gallery system that looked better than what we use to use. I'm thinking about purchasing something like that to add when we got everything the way we want it.

If you have VBulletin experience / suggestions please post up.

here's a link and if you need a Username and password

onebadasscobra for the user name and the password is snake

I'm a mod at this site (http://www.rmftc.com/forums/) & I've found VBulletin pretty nice to use.

The owner has the gallery feature (http://www.rmftc.com/gallery/) & it works really well. It can be used for hosting pics on the site as well so members don't have to use Photobucket, Image Station, Webhost, etc. It has

Member Galleries

Personal Galleries

Event Galleries

It's easy to upload pics & use. The pic url has tags for copy & paste or a link

im for chat...as long as you think it can be done safely. is there perhaps some different software that could be used to increase security?

There are quite a few galleries available. Quite a few free (open source) galleries as well. As long as you have PHP and MySQL you are in good shape.

A few real nice galleries:

http://coppermine-gallery.net/

http://gallery.menalto.com/

http://sourceforge.net/ (http://sourceforge.net/search/?type_of_search=soft&words=photo+gallery) has a long list of open source galleries.

I would be for a chat, if it can be done with out security problems. I like how alot other forums I visit have a chat. A chat can be used for more than just getting your questions answered *( that is more for the forums where that answer can be used later). Say you are just kinda sittin' on your computer and feel like talking, just go in a a start a conversation.

As for things I would like to see changed/ be different, I can't think of any at the moment. Lookin good though, already over 200 members, and 540 posts.

i suggest an IRC chat room set up and post the address here.it can be done for free, and everyone will have to find and download an irc client tho.piece of cake tho.then no direct link for anyone to tamper with the site, and another place to advertise this site .you can get bots to monitor the room for you when a mod is not around,IE to keep foul language etc to a minimum.pm me,i might be interested in getting a room and addy set up and going.
i can gather links to IRC clients too.

One thing that is kinda cool...

Over at clubrsx they have a "rep" system where you can add a positive point or negative point to a users "rep." I think it's kinda cool and if it bugs people they can turn it off.

Something I just noticed, the "15 Most Recent topics", thing on the front page, isn't there. Or it is not working I should say. I thought that was kinda usefull

The rep system is here. It loks like the scales of justice in the top right of the posts.

Where the hell are the Avatars?

The wife and I are going out. I'll look for avatars later. I need a break.........

I'm not so sure it was such a good feature, seems to me that it could have caused a lot of topics to be overlooked.

One forum I'm a member of has something similar set up that I think would work better. It's a forum for the Honda Shadow Sabre, TheSabreHood.net, and I go by the same username as I do here. It shows all unread posts, and separates them out by whether they've been updated since last visit. Unfortunately it wouldn't work on the main page.

I just sent a message to the owner of the other forum asking for instructions on how to set it up.

You can do that here.
On the top menu there is an option that says new posts. It will show you all the new posts since the last time you were on

This place is looking pretty spiffy already!
Thank you to everyone who has helped get it all up and running smoothly.

I have alot of experience with message boards, implementing as well as moderating, if you need any help. Just give me a shout if there is anything I can do for y'all.

i forgot all about IRC. ive still got an ancient version of PIRCH i could use. cant you get an impeded version as well?

i was in the chat room almost constantly (usually the only one), so its only fair i offer to do some sort of setting up or hosting (im somewhat familiar with the commands and tags IRC uses).

Can we have a Boobies Forum? :D

LOL

Yeah I see the new post link now.

The Forum I'm refering to has a link to new topics right under where it says (on mine) "Welcome, JoshT"

---------------------------

IE:

Welcome, JoshT
Number Of Unread Posts: 25 (http://therangerstation.com/forums/search.php?do=getnew)
You last visited: Today at 05:00 PM
Private Messages: Unread 4, Total 10.

---------------------------

The biggest difference in the new post search is that after the list of posts that've been updated since your last visit it has the following statement "The threads below have not been updated since your last visit but still contain unread posts." below that statement it continues on to list all unread posts.

Jeepman401

That would be a nice feature to have

The replay form other forum's admin.
Josh,
Its a drop in modification that they can get from the VBulletin support area. They need to enter their VBulletin license number to get access.

matt

One thing I'd forgotten to mention about that example I gave above, is IIRC that the "Number Of Unread Posts: 25" only shows the number of posts that have been updated since last visit.

one thing im sure you'll get to eventually, and i hate to mention it with all the other tuning that needs to be done....but...the white background sure is blinding...:o

I still have to work on the avatar issue. VBulletin won't let you link one in your profile.

The speed and ease of use of these forums is head and shoulders over the old ones. I think they will continue to take off very fast!

Is there a way to change the layout of the forums at all? As in... right now all the user info goes to the top of the posts instead on the left (like it was). Is that controlled by the board (administrators) or can we change that for ourselves as like a preference? I was looking but didn't see anything.

As of right now I don't see anyway to change the layout to display posts in a format like the old forum. Has anyone seen it different on another Vbulletin?

first off from one forum owner to another, sorry for whats going on here at TRS, hope you get it settled soon, second, you can change the layout to "legacy" in the admincp

admincp > vBulletin Options > Style & Language Settings > Use Legacy (Vertical) Postbit Template

click yes & save

any other questions let me know, been around vB for awhile :D

vbulletin is beta testing a blog system now, should be out soon

Chat. Do I dare? This is suppose to be how the hackers got in before.

also check out flashchat (http://tufat.com/s_flash_chat_chatroom.htm), integrates well with vB, even using same usernames

Now, I've told you guys this before. There are plenty of birding sites on the net.

But here's a couple to help you wait.

Jim,

The 'TRS' banner at the top of the forums is linked to the main forum index page....even when you are at the main forum index page. There is no easy way to return to the TRS home page. Can this be fixed?...or am I missing it? It seems the 'TRS' banner should point back to the TRS home page.

Just my $0.02. Thanks for all your hard work!

Paul.

I think IRC would be a good route to go with the chat I used to be very familiar with UnrealIRCd. You could even setup a java client such as http://www.pjirc.com/main.php

not sure if it's Vbulletin or not, but it's called itrader, we use it on Greatlakes4x4.com all the time, it make one much more comfortable when selling/buying parts to/from people because you can leave positive and negative feedback. here is our itrader page, not sure if you have to register or not to see it: http://www.greatlakes4x4.com/itrader_main.php?

I've found it emensely useful, and it will definately weed out the bad sellers/buyers.

is there anyway to change Rep Power's name to Reputation power? it's not all that easy to figure out what it could mean by "rep"

Also, we have a fuature there that we can code video into a post, like from youtube. we just put url-of-youtube-video and it embeds a little video screen in the post, same with google video and a couple other ones I think. It beats having a link.
