about a year ago me and my father replaced a throwout bearing on his 1983 ranger with a 2.3L, 4 speed 4x4. and a few months after that, the starter started to come loose and he didnt do anything about it. now that i have the ranger and it starts like hell. it seems like its just grinding and bearly starts it so i wonder if i have to get a hole new flywheel. but i heard that there is just a ring of teeth around the outside that is seperate from the flywheel so any imput would help i know its gonna need a starter

Some vehicles had replaceable ring gears, but most come as part of the flywheel.

You might luck out and just need a starter. Check the ring gear teeth when you pull the starter.

Disconnect the battery!!

i think it stoped raining out side so i think ill check it out and ill get back on and tell you what i find i know my dad tightened the starter back up and said somthing about fileing on the teeth so we'll see thanks

well i went out and looked i pulled the starter and inspected the flywheel it looks pretty chewed up and the starter isnt much better off i have an old 86 f150 that doesent run but still cranks. it has an aod trans do you think the starter out of it would work? it would save me some money

I think 5.0 starters work on 2.9Ls. Not sure about the 2.3Ls.

I checked into it with my 2.8, the part #'s are different. Dunno what the difference is though... :icon_confused:
