Heyy, I checked out a 2004 ranger today. Problem was that I had to hold the key turned for a few seconds before it would start. Is this a problem with he starter?

The trucks a 2.3l 4 cylinder automatic.

Also, to pull the car into drive or reverse, it was a little difficult. Is that normal for a Ranger? or is it a major problem?

I'd say run away if it's giving you problems just while looking. But that's just me. It could be nothing

What's the price on it anyway? That could be a tell-tale sign too that something's up.

EDIT: Can you get more specifics on the truck? like mileage? Is it a private sale or a dealer? As much info on it as possible would help give you a better answer

For the starting: Did you have to sit there and crank it and crank it and crank it, or did you just have to hold the key for a few seconds? Did it crank up slowly and then catch? If it's been sitting, it may just be a discharged battery.

As for the trans: Did you pull back on the shifter the whole way? That is the only thing I can think of that would cause that.

The truck is through a private seller. just about 100k on it. I just had to hold it for a few seconds. It has been sitting through the winter.
