OBD-1 port not working

My 1989 Ranger is throwing a code, and the obd port isn't showing ANYTHING on the screen of the code reader. Any ideas?
 
Are you using a scanner meant for OBD1, or for OBDII? You don't need a code reader either, you can jump two terminals (look in the tech library under the computer section) and count the flashes that your CEL makes to get the codes that way.
