When I took the intake plenum (upper intake manifold) off of the 5.0L(EFI) I'm putting in my B2 it looked GROSS. I looked like a f'ing chimney, and this is what the engine was breathing IN!!! blech. I am blaming the ExhaustGasRecycling system. (The EGR port is the center hole)

I want to block it off, take it out of the loop. I was just going to machine a steel plug and put it in the exhaust gas line coming up from the lower intake manifold going to the intake plenum. To remove it I would have to remove the intake plenum.

Has anybody done this?
What are the penalties? Will this adversely affect how it runs?

My '88 Ranger doesn't have EGR and my intake still is like that.

I think it's from gasses and other crap that gets sucked in though the PCV and into the intake from the crank case. I don't think you should remove the EGR if you're keeping EFI (keep it if possible), but that's most certainly your choice.

The EGR just recirculates the exhaust gas to create a filler inert gas for when you are not working the engine (like cruising down the highway) Technically it shouldn't be introducing anything extra to the engine that isn't already coming out the tail pipe. The center hole you discribe as being for the EGR looks alot cleaner/drier than the regular intake holes, so I don't think the buildup is related between the two of them. You might check/change your PVC system if it bugs you. I know it is completely different but my 2.8 has a fiber filter in the air cleaner to catch all the big chunks of stuff and oil before it goes back into the intake, you might check if you have (or should have) something similar that needs cleaned or replaced.

The intake on my ranger looked like that until I put an oil catch can on it, that cleaned it up A LOT. I built mine from scratch for about $25 bucks.

Yeah, it's oil residue from the PCV system. The 5.0s just have an open line from the valve cover to the throttle body...

Might be a higher mileage motor with blowby that's putting more oil into the system.

You should already have a pvc filter if your 5.0l EFI came from a car.
If your PCV valve as at the center rear of the intake, remove the PCV
valve and grommet in the intake take a pick or needle nose pliers and
you will be able to pull out the filter that is directly under the pcv valve
It is the same size as the hole in the intake and about an inch tall.
You should prob replace it, they get plugged up and can cause various
problems including, oil leaks and the soot your showing.
hope this helps.

Just take an old screwdriver and weld a large screw to the end of it. Jam it into the PCV filter and screw it in. Pull sharply on the screwdriver and voila the filter will come right out of there.
