Will a 3.0 bellhousing from a '91 or '92 ranger with the better 5 speed bolt up to the old weak 5 speed in an '87 ranger 2.9 5 speed? Or what would it take to put a manual transfer case from the '87 behind the 5 spd from the 3.0?

3.0L bellhousing is different than the 2.9L. The 2.8/2.9/4.0L all share the same bellhousing pattern.
All ranger transfer cases will fit behind any transmission, they are all the same bolt pattern and spline count.

Bell housing
I understand that the 2.9 and the 3.0 are different at the front but I'm asking about the other end, putting then on opposite trannys. I guess Id be better off to use the newstyle trans with nytransfer case anyhow. What about the rear bolt pattern/ adapter housing? Thanks for the quick reply

Ok...we the bellhousing is the front of the transmission that bolts to the engine block.
The tailshaft housings are all the same bolt patter and ANY RBV transfer case will bolt up to ANY RBV transmission. They are all the same as I stated.

I know what a bellhousing is, my question is are they removable like on say a muncie 4 speed etc, or integral with the trans case, and if the are seperate will they interchange ?

No, the bellhousings on RBV manual transmissions are not removable from the transmission.

The M5OD "better" transmission (also the ONLY manual trans ever put behind a 3.0) does not have a removable bellhousing. If you want an M5OD behind your 2.9, it MUST be from a 4.0.

Or a 2.9. They did have those, uncommon, but out there.
A 2.9 M5OD will be notched around the bell like the outside of a quarter. The 4.0 trans will be smooth. 4.0 trans works fine though. I have one on my truck, you just have to wait a little longer to hit OD.

Okay, so I will need the m50d which is in the 3.0 truck. It is a 2x4 truck. Is it a bolt on to put a manual transfer case behund it, or does the output shaft need to be changed? I am guessing the coupler housing from my old style 5 speed wont fit the m50d? I understand from one of the replies the output shaft is the same diameter and spline count on both trannys, but is a 2x4 the same length as the 4x4?

Did you read my post at all? The 3.0 trans will NOT bolt up or work at all. Even if it did, yes you would have to swap output shafts. They're different lengths and I'm 90% sure they're different spline counts too.

Since the output shaft is different as you say I would need to get a 4x4 M50D from a 4x4 truck to do this. I'm not sure why it seems to take a dozen explanations to get anyone to comprehend a simple question. Then with each explanation comes 5 more answers and more confusion.
