radio station pre-set wont work

i can set the pre-sets to a certain station while the truck is running. but if i shut her off for a few mins then start her up again, the presets will be erased. maybe once or twice i started up the truck right after i shut it off and they were still there. anybody know what this problem is? is it in the stereo itself?
and its the factory am/fm/tape radio.
 
Will your dome lights and stuff work with the truck off? It sounds like for some reason your stereo is losing it's always on 12V power source when the truck is shut off.

Might pull the stereo out and probe the wire for 12V hot to make sure it stays live when the key is turned off.
 
yup everything else works fine. and thank you, i might pull the radio and check those wires, but i might just live with it until i get a new system put in her.

Maybe check your manual about it and see if anything like that is mentioned.
 
Is it an aftermarket stereo? Did you install it yourself?

If someone else installed it, they probably screwed up with the constant power to the unit, and instead only ran power through the ignition or something.
 
Sorry missed that part...

Must be bad wiring. Has it always had this problem?
