rebuilding an axle - what should I replace?

Okay, I have a d28 and 7.5" Im ripping off of a truck thats garbage, and was going to weld the carrier on the 7.5" and rebuild the axles before putting them under my 'new' truck... But Im not really sure what I need and/or should replace for rebuilding an axle. Any advice?

Why are you welding it, and what is your purpose for this truck? Also, why are you rebuilding it? Is it noisy or just old?


Generally with a rebuild I'd replace everything but the carrier. Ring, pinon, spiders, bearings, and all the seals. Also the limited slip packs if so equipped.

The truck is for beating on. 4x4 trails and mud pits. They are a d28/7.5", so Im not exactly looking to spend a lot of money on them, I was just thinking there could be a few things (seals and bearings perhaps) that could be replaced for cheap. The axles are old, out of a 88 Bronco II with 330 000 km. There isn't anything specifically wrong with them, I just figured it would be good preventative maintenance. They have 4.10 gears in them, so I was going to stick them under my new truck when I get lift brackets and new leafs and stuff.
 
If it is holding oil I wouldnt mess with it unless ther is alot of backlash. if the pinion and axles are tight just change the oil it dont get any cheaper.
 
I also wanted to upgrade the drums on the 7.5"... What parts do I need from a donor for that, and whats the best donor? a 93-97 aerostar has bigger drums that are finned I have read?
Also, can the d28 brakes be upgraded at all?
