bad speedo

i have a 1994 ford ranger and the speedo when it reaches 55 miles an hour starts floating around i pulled the dash out and i dont think that the cable is loose in the back of the speedo do u think it could be the gage its self anone else had this problem

the other possibility is a stripped speedo gear going into the transmission, it's a $10 part, and you can pull it out to check with only a 7/16" wrench/socket
