If the cat is plugged it will make it sound different but the biggest thing is that it will effect the performance, especially in the higher rpm range.

a cracked manifold would make it sound like an exhaust leak, my 2.3 has a huge crack in it, but im getting used to the space ship sound it makes upon takeoff.
