Yep, what he said. It's really rather simple for a carb'd 302. Some dizzy's have the module inside, and are a 3 wire hookup if you want a tach.

gonna be hei setup, basically want some idea what wiring has to come out of 2.9 loom anyone got a diagram they can post up.

You can get a 1 wire HEI dizzy all you need is key on power to the dizzy and possibly the electric choke if applicable. If you go with duraspark dizzy with TFI coil all you need is key on hot to the red wire on the module and and run a wire from the start solenoid key on start to the white wire on the module. You can also use the duraspark dizzy with a 4 wire HEI module wired similar to the duraspark module. If you go duraspark dizzy you can use the stock TFI coil or one that runs on battery voltage, you dont have the ignition switch to run a ballast resistor without using a diode in the start circuit.

If you run a points distributor with a Pertronix unit inside, all you'll need to do is connect the hot wire on the existing Ranger coil to the Pertronix coil (may need a ballast resistor between the two) and attach the two wires from the Pertronix unit to the coil, one's hot, ones not. This way, you won't have that Fuggly HEI distributor blocking access to the carb.

thanks guys that helps, parts stores are few and fare between over here in england but have got some good supplyers here bit expensive but we have to pay

What kind of dizzy does your 302 have in it. 3 wires out the side is a duraspark 1 wire is points and 6 wire connector is a TFI. To tell what cam you have look at the cam gear on the dizzy if the ends are machined it is a steel cam and if the ends are rough cast it is a iron cam take note of that when buying a dizzy. Keep us posted!

thanks mate will post update when i do it,had accident at work this week crushed hand so might be a while

Kimcrwbr1, hopefully you can give me some help, you seem to know your stuff abou ignitions, im swapping alate 60's 302 out of a bronco into my ranger, i did some research and found that the coil and icm from my 1990 2.9 are the same as a 1990 bronco with a 5.0, so my question is as long as i match the gear can i use the distributor from a 1990 5.0 and just plug my ignition into it?
