The 2010 Rangers now have the Roll Stability Control system. I am wondering how this will effect my buying of second set of rims/wheels for the winter (hopefully without the TPMS sensors). How does TPMS effect this decision?

I have read that the newer Honda Accord's Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA...Honda's version of Roll Stability Control) won't work at all if you don't install TPMS sensors in the winter rims/wheels.

I don't want to buck the several hundred dollars for the TPMS sensors and the $$$ for a dealer or mechanic to reset the TPMS system when I switch tires twice a year.

Also, any concern with going a slightly narrower tire, 245/75R16 versus the stock 255/70R16 on either the TPMS or Roll Stability Control?

Thanks a bunch.

I honestly don't know, but honda has some stupid ideas like that. All of the vehicles i changed tires on we just threw the new rims and tires on and they were fine. the light popped up and that was it. You may be able to have a set of steel wheels purchased and aftermarket sensors installed from napa, then just have a tire shop reset them for your rig.

Again I'm not positive.

You should be able to get the pressure sensors and have the tire shop install them. Most of them are just banded on inside center of the wheel with metal banding like you see on pallets.

The newer (09 and up) ford's have started to use valve stem TPMS sensors (not sure if the new ranger is included, haven't changed tires on one yet. I know the 09 rangers still had band sensors. The band sensors are about $100 per corner, the valve stem sensors are about $30 per corner. It is actually federal law now that any vehicle 2008 and newer that came equipped with TPMS needs to retain the sensors when installing other wheels.

The RSC system has nothing to do with the TPMS system. You should be perfectly fine going with the 245/75R16.

Thanks for the replies.

My original post was wrong about Honda's VSA system and TPMS....without TPMS, the Honda's VSA system cannot be disabled.....this is lame when one is stuck.

I am a bit surprised that you haven't changed tires on a new Ranger yet. Terrace is located in a major snow belt area....had received almost 5 feet of snow one day back in Feb 1998 I think. I was living in Rupert where it was raining cats and dogs that same day....turned to the white stuff when it headed east. One year in Rupert, it rained about 10 feet (measured at the landfill - average year is 8 feet)....had started to grow webbed feet there.

Pretty sure it's just band sensors still IIRC on the new Ranger. Trying to remember about one that is getting steelies put on in the shop...

I thought they are still bands. I know the 09 and up escape, and 09 and up f150 are now valve stem TPMS.

Edit:

Just checked the workshop manual, it is a strap and sensor set up on the 2010 rangers.
