I'm in the process of looking for a new to me pickup, I am wondering which is more reliable a stick or Auto? I have heard the sticks have slave cylinder issues and in reading it seems the autos may have their share of problems as well. any input?

I'm going to assume your talking about rangers. Yes the M5OD trans does have issues with the slave cylinders, although I've had no troubles from mine in 185K miles. The shift rail plugs tend to leak on the M5OD, which if not watched, can lead to trans failure. Despite these issues, I'd take a M5OD ANY DAY over an automatic, especially the A4LD. It's geneally regarded that the A4LD is the weakpoint of any ranger. Just look around the site or google for more input on the weakness of the A4LD. In terms of reliability, go with a stick shift.
In personal preference, I like a stick shift. They are simple, easy to maintain, more efficient, and more fun to drive. Also, I'd rather change a clutch than an entire tranny.

Thank you, yes I was talking ranger. I am looking at an 2003 so I hope that has the M5OD. time to learn some more

please allow me to make myself perfectly clear.

STANDARDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah a manual is going to be more servicable and simpler and will not break down as often the only problem people seem to have with the slave cylinders is when they replace the clutch or something...

The automatic can be a good trans too but they HATE heat, so add a larger oil cooler and you'll be good.

I've seen a lot of slave cylinder issues that seem attributable to dirt being in the system. I strongly suspect if you thoroughly flush the remainder of the system out when you replace a component, you'll greatly reduce the chances of having a subsequent failure.

two words: BENCH BLEED

do the whole hydraulic system, OUT OF THE CAR and you wont have many problems.
