... you're driving around town, on the main drags, in the FLATlands, @ 45-50 MPH (w/ the M5OD) in 3rd gear instead of 4th?

It IS easier in 3rd to go from 50-60MPH, but it's a bit NOISY rolling about at 3,300 RPMs, eh? Plus the fart-pipe kids think you want to race them 'cause you're revved a bit, lol.

Many that have the 3.0 say power and mileage a improved at higher rpm.
 
All of the above.

Just like limas, the Vulcan is happy above 3000. Pretty much all the time. They get better milage when they are wound up.

Don't worry about it being noisy.
