She's a red '86 Ranger. Special ordered stripped, with A/C added. Her first home was with a central Florida farm family. Years passed and eventually she and their boy ran off to college. It was a nice change of pace and they went all over together. She didn't mind, she was born for it. Beach trips and band gigs, cartin friends and cartin furniture, they did it all.

He finally got that law degree he'd been studying so hard for, and she was proud to be in the parking lot with the Beamers and Benzes, so far from where they'd started. One day he went to work without her, and came home that night with a Porsche twenty years her junior. Her jealousy burned until the weekend when he decided to go help a buddy. The more they drove, the hotter she got. Finally she lost her head and wouldn't have any more of it.

It was a hot mid-August day, and ten miles along the highway through the desolate swampland of Paines Prarie to get back to Gainesville. As the day cooled, righteous warmth smoldered in her iron heart. Two days later she was sold to a local horse-trader who helped her cool off a bit and introduced her to Jay...

He's a jack-of-all-trades, works retail to pay the bills, and spends his extra time geeking and wrenching. A Navy brat, he moved a lot and finally settled in Gainesville. Right now he's studying/practicing for his welding certs and preparing to go back to school for an Engineering degree in Materials Sciences.

He needed a vehicle, and Rita was in the right place at the right time. It was easy to see she'd been around a bit, but that was ok. He had the time and the ability... as the money came along he'd fix her wounds. She needed someone to want her again, for nothing more than she was, and that was exactly what he wanted.

Hope y'all enjoyd this little narrative of how I came to have my Ranger. In the future I'll avoid referring to myself in third-person and I'll do my best to keep from anthromorphizing my truck too much. :)

So,details... 1986 Ranger 2.3 v.A 4x2 SWB. All stock, no opts from fact. ex. AC.
Plans are for a new (reman) 2.3 and reapir of the driveline to keep her going while I do the body repairs. Eventually I'd like to do a custom 'glass body/air kit and V-8 w/ trans and rear.

I love the site, it seems to be a pretty amiable place so far. Thanks to everyone that posts with thier knowledge and advice. Hopefully I'll learn enough to become a useful member. :)

Anthropomorphize all ya want! A man's relationship with his truck is a deeply felt, productive, and occasionally expensive affair but if you take good care of her, take her out to all kinds of places, and have an ongoing dialogue, it can be very rewarding.

Just ask my Iris.

Greatest introduction ever.

great story. if only trucks could talk. have any pics. of her.

No pics yet. Have to get a camera. Right now her paint is shot. I was able to gloss it up a bit with a random orbit, some rubbing compound and some wax, and a _lot_ of patience. But I've been busy the last few weeks and she needs another coat.

The's the typical rust at the top corners of the windshield, and the firewall needs attention before all the stuff mounted to it falls off. There's some dents and creases in the bedsides, and a hacked in trailer wiring that keeps blowing fuses to the brake lights. The bench vinyl is worn out, the exhaust system is full of holes, the floorpans need replaced, the clutch and power steering are leaking fluid god-knows-where, and she drinks about a quart of oil every thousand miles. She sounds like the flywheel is loose when she starts, there's a real soft knock at low rpm, and a high pitched rattling when under constant speed that goes away on decel or accel.

Otherwise, she's great. She's got either 307k or 407k on her, and she gets me A to B. Now it's just a matter of picking what I want to fix and how I want to do it. Do I just buy a reman 2.3, or build one? Do I drop in a 302 and a new driveline and axles? Clean, repair, and repaint the existing body... or fiberglass? Redo the bench... or get some buckets and a console? Leave her stock height... or do a 3/4 drop? Stock 14s and ATs... or 235x16s? So many choices...and so many ideas here. :)

OH! Scovilles, do you have a thread w/ pics & etc for Iris?
