I have gone through several pages of posts relating to my question as well as some online tire size comparison sites. All coming to the conclusion that I can use the following tire sizes on a 1990 xlt 4x4 without the tires rubbing or mis-fitting.
Either of the three sizes will work:
215-75-R15
225-75-R15
235-75-R15

On my Ranger now I have 215-70-R15, mainly concerned about putting a set of 235-75-R15's; I have a spare set of that size.
Seems like I can swap them out, but I want to make sure. Anyone else have used the wider tires, 235's without fender rubbing?
Thanks!!

235-75-R15s were a stock tire size option on 1990 Ranger 4x4 so you will have no issues with rubbing

Yeah, and it was extremely common on first gen Explorers, you can go to 31x10.50 15's with minor rubbing also, come to think of it I don't remember if they even rubbed when I ran them for 5 years...
