I have an 87 ranger with the 2.3 and the gear that meshes with the distributor is eaten up along with the distributor and i dont know what that gear is called so i cant ger a new one

You have a 2.3l Lima engine

You need to replace the Auxiliary shaft, it is one piece no separate gear
The distributor has a Drive gear which is a separate piece.

You should also replace the Aux shaft bearings as they are most likely what caused the problem which chewed up the gears

It will be a bit before I can dig through my parts, but I have a spare auxiliary shaft floating around my spare parts pile somewhere... I'll try to dig through this weekend...
