whats the difference between m50dr1 & m5odr1HD

Will a 97 explorer 5 speed fit in a 91 4.0 ranger, i saw that in97 explorer the transmission were m50d-r1hd, and the ranger is a m50d-r1. is there a difference, and will it work?

Your 91 has a speedometer cable going into it.

See if the 97 does. If so, you can use it. If not, it'll bolt up but you won't have any speedo/odo.

i read the link, thanks, but also i did not find anything referring to the speedo cable, my speedo goes in my transfer case not my trans.

^that swap details an early Explorer, but it should provide you "some" info, since it is virtually identical to a Ranger of that era.


You will retain your original T-case, so I see no speedometer problem then. Looks doable.

Im pretty sure that the hd doesnt have the bosses to mount the shifter for a manual shift xfer case. Not a problem if you have 2wd of electric shift 4wd I suppose.
