I'm going to pick up a new-to-me ranger this weekend. 91 4.0 manual trans truck with 200k miles on it. He said the engine is really weak and will roll back down hill in gear so he's thinking it most likely is low on compression.
Included with the truck is a 91 explorer engine, 5-speed and t-case that was running well with 150k on it.
I don't think I want to put the money into fully rebuilding either motor if it not needed.
I'm planning on pulling the pan, intake, and valves covers, new rear main, and inspection of the valvetrain. Is it worth pulling the heads off it? should I do the front main?
Anything else I should check while it's out? Is there a way to improve oil flow to the rockers?
Clean the lifters?
This is my first ford so I don't really know what I'm getting into.
