what other engines will work?

I have a 98 4.0 ranger with a bad engine. I want to throw an inexpensive junkyard motor in. I'm wondering which year range engines will work in my 98. Thanks in advance for any help.

302 is a direct fit

The 302 would be an awsome alternative I'm just not sure that ca smog laws would allow it. I think I want something that will wire in direct without changing anything. My main question is would a 4.0 from let's say 94 to 2000 be a direct fit.

With a lot of work.

Yes it will "bolt in" an 98+ truck, but a great many other parts have be bolted in too.
