Cicadageddon 2024!

Last spring the news was all a buzz about the big Cicada invasion.

Then, nothing.

Where's the footage of people running for their lives? Buildings and trees covered in them.

Did they not come?

at my place I might have had 6 or 7 show up, nothing like last year when every other step
I took may have crushed one......

We had a ton come out over the course of 2-3 weeks. I got home one day and heard a warbling noise I thought was some kind of siren until I learned it was one of the two species that had emerged. They covered a few trees and bushes in particular and we still have a lot of shells hanging around in covered spots like under my mailbox but I didn't get them plastered all over my windshield and at work one county over they were nowhere to be found so I guess it was pretty localized.
They look disgusting right after they molt, btw.

We've had our fair share this summer.

We've also had a worse year about three years ago.

Dunno but with a motley pack of chickens, guineas and ducks on patrol it seems normal or maybe less than average. They go nuts for japanese beetles too.

Well I foundation dead one in my garage today... but like Eric, I haven't noticed any difference especially compared to 2021

We have a pool, they occasionally show up but we have 20+ wild cats that breed and we occasionally feed so that's probably what happens to them 😉

in general theres been a lot less bugs this summer, think its because its been so hot & dry this year

More humidity than the last years, but it's supposed to be a more active hurricane year, so far we only had a single one.

These days in this area we get that late summer high pressure system that seems to never leave.

Taking statistical analysis in school it's funny how things get displaced and mis-referenced over the years. Makes it seem like news. But it's not, more likely the lack of something real rather than virtual. I like the graphic though, may steal it for a tee shirt "cicada con" cookout on some july 4th somewhere. In Tempe, used to shoot 'em right out of the tree, it's really great when the bee bee lands and then it's switch off.

Ranger power activate....that's what's happening. All those V8 swaps.

The last bad year we had was in either 2000 or 2001. So we are overdue but it hasn't happened yet. But yeah, the was a big to do about nothing by the news media. I wonder if the same people who did the cicada forecast also do the weather. I only wonder since the track record for forecasting weather seems to be about the same.

i found a shell to one on the steps yesterday and it made me wonder about them too
